Our family is taking the idea of saving money and spending less to a whole new level during the recent economic recession. That means when we DO need a new piece of furniture we shop around and make sure we find any available discounts online or in the store. We are on the hunt for some extra sleeping units since we expect friends and family to crash with us during the Christmas season and found some great deals on IKEA folding beds in our local store. These lightweight beds are actually quite comfortable and can be used for kids and adults. Using several bulk blanket packs and some cheap pillows we now have beds for six extra people, in addition to the two regular guest beds our home contains.

Choosing The Right Decking Material
December 27th, 2009 — Home and Furnishings
If you’re building a new deck off your house, or getting ready to replace one, it pays to know what latest materials are available. Your deck is an investment that is expected to last for many years. Choosing the wrong materials could result in a shorter lifespan than you expect. Wood is the most common choice for decking, but there are other materials like composites which look great and have a longer lifespan. The demand for long lasting decks has grown over the years, resulting in manufacturers coming up with inventive ideas for consumers.
Many homeowners cannot think of using any other material than wood. If this sounds like you, then you may want to consider the different woods that are available. Although more costly, exotic woods can last a lot longer than standard varieties. Tropical hardwoods are known for lasting up to 25 years even if untreated. Their beauty is unprecedented but comes at a high cost.
If you aren’t adverse to branching out and trying new things, consider building a composite deck. Composite is just another word for a mixture of several materials, specifically plastic and wood. The plastic used in decking is extremely durable and scratch resistant. It can be colored and textured to resemble real wood. Wood particles are mixed into the plastic, therefore a certain degree of care is needed to keep composites healthy.
Another composite material is wood that has been infused with glass particles. It sounds dangerous at first, but it’s actually quite safe. Not to mention, it has an expected lifespan of forty years. This method of treating wood is more natural than pressure treatments.
Within the plastic family is a material called PVC. This is an extremely durable material that does not use recycled materials in its manufacturing. It is basically maintenance free and has a long life. Foot traffic and other wear does not easily damage PVC. Life similar plastic products it can be textured and colored to your liking. It is mildew resistant and rot proof, unlike wood products.
Most homeowners would rather enjoy time outside with their family than working on the deck. People want a product that won’t rot or fade in the sun. While wood still has a strong hold in the decking industry, materials like composites are slowly paving their own way into decks around the world. Stay on the lookout for the latest innovations to make sure you choose the best material for your home. With such a large investment, it definitely pays to become educated on the available products on the market.
