Coverage of Forestry in Ireland

If trees and forests were left undisturbed, if man all of a sudden disappeared from the face of the planet, the trees would probably be an indefinite feature in our environment. It is only through man’s involvement that our forests are being drastically reduced year on year. Every single year, an area the size of the Republic of Ireland is deforested by man. This equates to approximately 20,000 ha per day. There are certain natural catastrophes that happen in which forestry is destroyed. But, it is only the interference of man that really has a huge and often irreversible impact. If a forest burns down, it will naturally grow again, but it has no chance once it has been torn out of the ground by our machinery. We must contribute towards reforestation and not deforestation, not only for ourselves and our descendants, but for the many other living creatures who depend on the forest for survival.

Irish forestry coverage is at around 10% at the moment. In terms of coverage in hectares, the amount of forestry cover that we have here is over 670,000 ha. This in itself is a great achievement considering that in 1900 we only had one percent coverage. If you go back far enough into the distant past of this country you will find an island which is covered with forestry, almost total coverage. This was when the forests in Ireland were part of the great forests that grew across the northern European continent. The continuing growth of forestry in Ireland is due to several different factors. The Irish government is pushing more and more resources into trying to incentivize the Irish landowners to plant trees on their land. Also, forestry techniques have improved in the past few decades so that we are getting much more out of our forests now than we once did. For instance, forest thinning has improved dramatically.

It is really up to the people of the world to try and preserve as much of our native forestry as we possibly can. Also, we must plant trees that are going to help to sustain our environment in the long-term. Trees are one of nature’s ways of reducing the overall carbon dioxide in our atmosphere, and they also increase the amount of oxygen.

What Makes Antimony a Metalloid?

Antimony is what you would call a semi-metal or metalloid. In other words, it resembles a metal in appearance and in many of its physical properties. However, it does not react as other metals do. Other metalloids include arsenic, silicon, germanium, boron, tellurium, and polonium. Generally, elements to the right of these on the periodic table are considered nonmetals and elements to the left are considered metals. In terms of its metallic properties, antimony is a poor conductor of both heat and electricity. For example it has about 5 percent of the thermal conductivity of copper and less than 4 percent the electro-conductivity. Also, unlike other metals, it is fragile and quite brittle. Finally, to further mark the difference between metals and metaloids, the mechanical strength of antimony decreases with increases in purity.

England’s best kept secret – Hedingham Castle

Do you want to immerse yourself in the historical aura of one of the finest medieval castles in eastern England? Hedingham Castle is a majestic Norman keep in immaculate condition, yet the tourist crowds have barely heard of it. It boasts one of the finest Norman domestic interiors in existence anywhere in the world, and yet this is a family-owned castle on private land that is hard to find and very much off the beaten track.

Castle Hedingham is an eponymous  idyllic and remote village just an hour north-east of London, but can be accessed in the first instance by the M11 motorway and then A414 road.  The village boasts charming streets, quaint thatched cottages and an old church, and feels like the epitome of a sleepy and picturesque English rural community. The castle’s owners do not reside there, but live in a much more modest country house in the grounds. You turn left over a stone bridge – literally, into their garden, and the 100 foot stone monolith of the old castle strikes you round the corner.

Hedingham Castle stands serene and proud in a calmly manicured garden, but its brute stone facade is testament to its more dramatic history as military stronghold that endured bloody sieges and warfare. The highlight is surely the Great Hall with drapes, shields and a minstrels’ gallery from which musicians would have played as the lord and lady ate a medieval banquet feast. You can imagine yourself a time traveller back in that darker but more vibrant medieval world.

General Knowledge

Although we live in an age of specialization, being a generalist provides advantages in everyday life and in the business world. Today the Internet brings information to our fingertips. But despite our mobile devices, people still need a broad framework of fundamental knowledge to function well.

For example, with an understanding of how to fill out forms, one can apply for jobs, open bank accounts, and obtain insurance, all necessary functions for contemporary life. A basic understanding of anatomy helps a person describe symptoms accurately. “The pain is in my stomach,” helps diagnosis more than “The pain is in the bottom half of my body.”

In the business world, when faced with new challenges, general knowledge helps an entrepreneur, a manager, or employee find solutions more efficiently. One can “connect the dots” on what is needed, although one may still need to obtain specific knowledge to accomplish a particular goal.

Great Travel Books to Read

If we were to take an honest look at the publishing world there often seems to be precious few travel books worth reading. Too often our shelves are burdened with lackluster stories that fail to deliver the emotional responses we all crave from a great adventure, or worse, we load up our backpack and luggage with ill researched or just plain out of date travel guides that turn out not to serve any purpose better than that of propping up the weathered table in the common room of the local hostel that was clearly rescued from a dumpster no less than a decade prior. But none of that is to say that there aren’t some truly great travel books out there to be found…if you’re willing to do some digging. (Although, I highly recommend ignoring most of the travel guides out there in favor of the internet unless you know that you wont have access wherever you happen to be going.) The important thing, if you’re looking for pure entertainment value is to stick to the travel narratives shelf and ask around that weathered hostel table to find out what everyone else is recommending.

The Basics of How to Buy Penny Stocks

So you want to know where and how to buy penny stocks.  Let’s start with the very basics.  This is real money, not a game, so it is important that you have a firm grasp on even the most mundane of details.

First, learn how to identify both a penny stock’s name and a penny stock’s ticker symbol on the quotation service you find it (usually OTCBB or Pink Sheets).

Next, understand how to identify and state the volume of the stock you might be interested in buying.  Volume is imply the number of shares of a penny stock you wish to buy.  Penny stocks generally are traded in the thousands.

Then you need to define the price per share you are willing to spend.  And after all that, you need to set an expiration date for your order.  This is vital as penny stocks fluctuate wildly and are not very liquid.

This means it may take a few days for your broker to buy the number of shares you ordered.  You want to set an expiration date so that you don’t accidentally buy when you are no longer interested in the stock.

Home Schooling Advantages

More and more families are turning to homeschooling. This is for a variety of reasons and the reasons one family chooses aren’t always the same as the next. However, there are a huge number of homeschooling advantages for your family to consider.

First of all you have total control over your child’s education. You can choose to teach them something or to skip it. This allows parents to choose science that includes evolution and or creation as they see fit. They can choose sex education and how it will be taught. Their child’s education can be based on their beliefs or can be more complete then the public school would provide.

Public school tries to do a good job giving your child an education. However, they spend six to eight hours a day Monday through Friday when the work can be completed in half of that time. The school day is set up for moving around, starting and stopping, and when it is all said and done it isn’t the most effective way for learning. Your child can complete school in the mornings or can go three days a week. You can set their schedule and they can complete more school work in fewer hours.

You can also create an education that is better then what your child would get in the public school system. If your child has a learning disability this is very easy because you can customize their education to their needs and learning styles. However, no matter what type of student your child is you can customize the education and they can learn more and better then they would in public school.

There are a lot of home schooling advantages and these are just a few to get you started. Homeschooling is becoming a very big movement. It includes people of all economical classes, all races, and even all religions! This is because there are a lot of great reasons to homeschool.

Subsidized Stafford Loan
This is a need-based loan with a low interest rate. Subsidized means that the government will pay the interest while the student is in school or on a grace period.

Unsubsidized Stafford Loan
This is a non-need-based loan with a low interest rate. Unsubsidized means that the interest must be paid by the borrower. Generally, this is a loan that is best for students who can’t get other types of financial aid, or need extra money on top of other financial aids.

Federal Plus Loan
This loan is for part or full time students. It is based on credit history and tuition costs. Though the interest is low, the repayment needs to be fast, usually 2-3 months after the full loan is dished out or the student graduates.

Federal Perkins Loan
This loan is for those in an extreme financial situation. It also has a very low interest rate. However, the loan amount will likely be low due to the limited funds for this type. The part time student grace period on this loan is up to 9 months before interest is added, but be wary — late payments could hurt your credit.
