Coverage of Forestry in Ireland

If trees and forests were left undisturbed, if man all of a sudden disappeared from the face of the planet, the trees would probably be an indefinite feature in our environment. It is only through man’s involvement that our forests are being drastically reduced year on year. Every single year, an area the size of the Republic of Ireland is deforested by man. This equates to approximately 20,000 ha per day. There are certain natural catastrophes that happen in which forestry is destroyed. But, it is only the interference of man that really has a huge and often irreversible impact. If a forest burns down, it will naturally grow again, but it has no chance once it has been torn out of the ground by our machinery. We must contribute towards reforestation and not deforestation, not only for ourselves and our descendants, but for the many other living creatures who depend on the forest for survival.

What Makes Antimony a Metalloid?

Antimony is what you would call a semi-metal or metalloid. In other words, it resembles a metal in appearance and in many of its physical properties. However, it does not react as other metals do. Other metalloids include arsenic, silicon, germanium, boron, tellurium, and polonium. Generally, elements to the right of these on the periodic table are considered nonmetals and elements to the left are considered metals. In terms of its metallic properties, antimony is a poor conductor of both heat and electricity. For example it has about 5 percent of the thermal conductivity of copper and less than 4 percent the electro-conductivity. Also, unlike other metals, it is fragile and quite brittle. Finally, to further mark the difference between metals and metaloids, the mechanical strength of antimony decreases with increases in purity.

Great Travel Books to Read

If we were to take an honest look at the publishing world there often seems to be precious few travel books worth reading. Too often our shelves are burdened with lackluster stories that fail to deliver the emotional responses we all crave from a great adventure, or worse, we load up our backpack and luggage with ill researched or just plain out of date travel guides that turn out not to serve any purpose better than that of propping up the weathered table in the common room of the local hostel that was clearly rescued from a dumpster no less than a decade prior. But none of that is to say that there aren’t some truly great travel books out there to be found…if you’re willing to do some digging. (Although, I highly recommend ignoring most of the travel guides out there in favor of the internet unless you know that you wont have access wherever you happen to be going.) The important thing, if you’re looking for pure entertainment value is to stick to the travel narratives shelf and ask around that weathered hostel table to find out what everyone else is recommending.
