Financing a Swimming Pool

A friend of mine moved who used to live right by me, moved away a few years ago to a “better” neighborhood about half an hour away.  All of the houses there cost about five times what his previous house cost.  I never asked how he afforded it, but I guess he’s getting by.

One curious thing that I didn’t realize until I visited his new home is that some areas (like his) will not let you put an above ground swimming pool on your property.  If you want to own a pool in his neighborhood, it must be an in the ground model.  So, he finally decided that he would like to have a swimming pool and he will now go through the process of financing a swimming pool

for tens of thousands of dollars.  He gets to go through all of the loan applications and dealing with contractors that is usually reserved for people building a new house.  Sounds like fun.

I wouldn’t mind having an in-ground pool, but I’m very sure that my above ground model gets people every bit as wet and cools them off just as much.  I guess it must be a way of keeping out the wrong element.  Paying more to be told what you can do with your property.  It just doesn’t make sense to me.
