There is an old saying: “Say it with flowers”. This is a lovely sentiment but one where the messenger is short-lived and will wither away after a week or so. The last thing you want is for the message itself to die along with the flowers. So whether you want to express your love on Valentines Day, or give a wonderful birthday present to somebody special in your life, what could be more enduring than a gemstone ring. The thought that goes into an everlasting gift – and the message of love or friendship enshrined in it – is even more powerful if you consider giving a ring where the gem is their birthstone.
A birthstone is simply a gem that represents a particular month of the year. You can give somebody any type of gift containing the birthstone corresponding to the month they were born, for that extra special personal touch. Different civilizations devised their own systems for birthstones, but the ones we commonly use these days are as follows:
- January – garnet
- February – amethyst
- March – aquamarine
- April – diamond
- May – emerald
- June – pearl
- July – ruby
- August – peridot
- September – sapphire
- October – opal
- November – topaz
- December – turquoise
So, for example, if your girlfriend was born in May you might like to buy her an emerald ring for her birthday. It doesn’t really matter what the occasion is, whether it is Valentines or Christmas; a birthstone piece of jewelry will always go down well. Of course, some stones are more expensive than others, and if you are unable to stretch your budget to buy a lavish diamond ring for your April born sweetheart, then in many cases you will be able to get a cubic zirconia ring where the stone matches the color of her birthstone, whether that is a diamond or a ruby or sapphire. Be honest though; don’t tell her it’s a diamond if it is really a cubic zirconia. Your truth and honesty are certainly more precious and she’ll understand in these tough economic times!
